Chicago July 9 Secretly James Wilson met with stockyard representatives and packers to discuss the new federal law. Packers protested Wilson’s criticism of their economy and left with copies of the provisions, after a gloomy meeting. A packers committee then held a secret session.
James Sloan, the president’s secret bodyguard, pleaded guilty to assaulting newspaper photographer Clearance Legendre who had photographed the President and Mrs Roosevelt. Sloan was fined ten dollars and costs and dismissed amid Legendre’s disappointment. No conviction was secured as Legendre hoped for broader notoriety through the case.
