Mammoth Choir Draws Two Thousand At Chautauqua

Yesterday's Chautauqua crowds topped two thousand not counting campers at the grounds in La Grande Oregon for Fourth of July events. Ada Wallace Unruh headlined W C T U day while L D S choirs from La Grande and Baker City performed this evening. Astronomy talk by Prof S D Townley of Stanford added science appeal amid large classes in domestic science horticulture and Bible study with a busy week of concerts lectures and round tables through July 7.

Bulgarian Wrestlers Chase Carl Bush in La Grande

Bulgarian wrestler Tom Thompson and companion H Ellisel arrived in La Grande after a failed attempt to capture Carl Bush the Montana wrestler. Bush had defeated Thompson in Caldwell last week in a two hour ten minute match. Thompson, at 148 pounds, mixes Turkish and catch as catch can styles and plans further matches in Baker City with Heinrich.

Lightning Jerker Telegraph Operator

Manager Howard of the Western Union earned the nickname lightning jerker for a ringside telegraph report during a prize fight. An operator relayed every consequential blow and sent the knockout bulletin to the Observer office in seventeen seconds.

Drunks Arrested Yesterday on Disorderly Charges

Four individuals were arrested on drunk and disorderly charges. T. E. Hubbard paid a $10 fine, Gus Jokle served a $5 fine, John Bryoyle left town never to return, and John Cameron was fined $5.

In La Grande many children faced dismay as fireworks and firecrackers were banned inside city limits. A young spectator vowed to unite peers next year and try to overturn the restriction.

Middleton Ohio July 5 The recovery of an unidentified man in the wreckage of the Twentieth Century limited train brings the death toll to twenty one with many more believed dead in the debris. Thirty are seriously injured and in hospitals. Most victims are Ohioans. Coroner and grand jury investigate the cause. no blame assigned yet.

Italian gunslinger halts Pendleton street fight at depot

At the O R and N depot an altercation between two colored men over money escalated until a well known local youth named Shine fled. A nearby Italian friend drew a revolver, quelling the fight and sending the gunman to jail on a possible concealed weapons charge while Shine recuperates from fright.
