Oregon picks Bourne and Mulkey to U S Senate in split vote

The legislature elected Jonathan Bourne Jr to the long term U S Senate starting March 4 1907 and Fred Mulkey to the short term ending March 4 1909. Bourne, a Portland financier active in Oregon mines and reform movements, faces a productive term anticipated to build on direct democracy efforts. Mulkey, born in Portland and a Yale Law School graduate, will join Washington soon after swearing in to fill the Mitchell vacancy.

Pioneer John Hugg Dies in Grande Ronde Valley

John Hugg a longtime Grande Ronde Valley resident since 1880 died of old age. He was born in Switzerland in 1885 and buried in Summerville cemetery. He leaves five children and a sister, Rachel Roulet of Elgin, aged 84. The Hugg family long influenced the valley’s growth.
