Oregon House Debates Bills On Insane Asylums And Crime

Balem January 19. A house bill aims to end private insane asylums by requiring licenses and county court oversight. Albee of Multnomah proposed sterilization for habitual criminals and certain offenses, a measure previously vetoed by Chamberlain. City Council approves expert review of three years of city books

Last night the La Grande city council authorized hiring experts to examine and certify city finances for the past three years. Bonded officials were sworn in, and proposals for hard surface pavement on Greenwood Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue were approved or filed. The body also discussed sidewalk work on the south side of 8th Avenue and bitulithic paving on Jefferson Avenue from Chestnut to Cove.

Prosecution rests in Schenk case at Wheeling trial

The Wheeling West Virginia trial of Mrs. Schenk concluded its prosecution phase today with the state resting near noon. The defense planned to begin its case this afternoon after the prosecution rested, with Schenk possibly taking the stand again if the defense opened.

Large Borax Deposit Found in Lake County

Portland Ore January 19 A special report notes what is described as the second largest borax deposit in the United States located in Lake county. The Albert Summer and Alkali Lake Valleys hold about 3400 mineral locations. Borax is described as exceptionally pure and comparable in value to Death Valley deposits. A claim owners company is formed and machinery will be brought in for extensive summer development. A large workforce is expected to mine the beds.

Landslide Stops Tamfi Trains Near Portland

A major landslide at Rooster Rock about 25 miles from Portland halts trains on the O R and N line. Traffic is at a standstill while workers clear the cuts. Officials expect service to resume by evening though eastbound trains are held in Portland. No injuries reported as the area is prone to slides.
