The Oregon legislatures met yesterday and organized with both houses ready for business. This session will see the first formal election of a United States senator by the legislature, a historic moment as state interests come to the fore.
Governor Chamberlain urges lawmakers to elect F W Malley and Jonathan Bourne as U S Senators, call for state county tax separation, raise inheritance and income tax laws, cut excess notaries, consider a state railroad commission, state bank examiner, and lobbyist publicity. He favors centralized school control, costed asylum and convict transport reforms, and questions a jute mill plan.
Rising public support for government ownership grows as the Interstate Commerce Commission shows its strength. The public awaits results and warns that failure to protect interests could lead to direct government takeover of railroads. Also a help wanted note asks for a hired girl for general house work at the Land Office.
