Jan 1 reports from the Umentina reservation describe severe starvation among Indians ponies and cattle as cold weather and deep snow persist. Ed Kidder notes three dead calves on the road and an woman with 100 horses lacking hay or grain. Cattle starvation and wildlife impacts also described with rabbits seeking shelter around barns.
The receiver reports about $146 000 collected from shareholders in the defunct bank. Only one third of the assessment has fallen due, with about $30 000 hoped to be gathered. Some shareholders paid the full assessment on December 19. The United States National Bank has refitted the rear room on Depot Street at no expense to the receiver.
Notice states a black and brown Jersey cow impounded in La Grande city pound on January 6. The dehorned animal has three holes in each ear torn out and no visible brands. If not claimed and charges paid by January 19, 1909 the animal will be sold to the highest bidder for cash.
