New York court hears Evelyn recounts ruination at White's studio after Thaw proposal. She describes coercion by her mother, alcohol influenced visits, and repeated meetings with White as Jerome probes her memory. Cross examination to run another day and a half.
Creditors who lent money to Tip Molenext and Walter Richardson, two men who fled Pendleton, got partial repayment after a sheriff arranged a telephone conference. T. B. Johnson and other locals induced the pair to settle board, grocery, and clothing debts totaling about fifty dollars, with rumors of additional bills outstanding. The men were released and claimed they would return to La Grande within two weeks.
The east bound fast mail on the Union Pacific collided with a rock slide near Norman Utah this morning. The engine and two cars were wrecked and the engineer is reportedly under the engine. A number of passengers were injured. W J Snodgrass said his son’s body would arrive on No 2 that evening and the funeral is planned for tomorrow with time not yet set.
Flora McDonald, wife of the former Chicago gambling king, was arrested after a man named Webster Guerin, 35, was shot dead in his office this morning. Witnesses report a detective was on the floor and McDonald claimed the victim had killed himself while distressed and crying out.
A. H. Hawley and E. L. Gibbs, Interstate Commerce Commission special agents, arrived in Oakland after probing the Durkee train wreck. They focused on air brake and equipment failures that prevented braking on the freight and nearly caused a passenger collision. Their findings were brief and a full report is expected to the commission. Hawley serves on the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen board of grand trustees.
A New York report claimed the Russian czar was assassinated but appears to be false as a bucket shop fabrication. Walton Skipworth, Methodist Episcopal presiding elder at The Dalles, recently underwent appendectomy with favorable recovery and improving condition.
The Oregon House passed an annual appropriation of 125000 for the university despite the governor’s veto by a narrow four vote margin. The action funds the university’s operations for the next year amid political contention.
Circuit court opened with jury selection for the State v s Stoop et al case charged with destroying a dam on the Minam River. Stoop pleaded not guilty and sought a separate trial granted. Opening arguments given. witnesses called after recess as other cases were disposed.
Salem report says the Jones bill authorizing a state appropriation for the Locks at Oregon City on the Willamette river passed the senate, contingent on federal funds. The reapportionment bill was filed in the house. Multnomah delegates broke a pledge by tabling the bill. the wagon road sales near Coos Bay and the Irrigation Code bill were both killed.
The city's public schools hold activities this afternoon for Washington's birthday with the G A R and W R C in attendance. Tomorrow is a legal holiday, so there will be no classes.
Earl Kilpatrick a freshman at the state university was among three students to pass the midwinter examinations with all A grades. Grande Ronde students at the school are making a creditable showing and Kilpatrick's high mark will please his many friends in the city.
E L Bartlett of La Grande promotes a two year old gelding by Satin Royal out of Jess B by Raymont Jr claiming strong speed and potential. The colt backs Mr Bartlett’s belief Satin Royal will prove top in the Northwest racing scene. Councilman J T Williamson and son Joseph S B Williamson travel up the Grande Ronde River on a brief business trip.
The Eastern Railway steamer Berlin ran aground near Rotterdam while entering the harbor and broke up in a gale. One passenger, Walter E. Ferguson, was saved. 160 passengers and all crew are reported drowned, including members of the German Opera Company. The ship was en route from Harwich to Rotterdam and the loss is blamed on the storm and navigator miscalculation.
