In Petersburg on February 8 the police gave major employers a list of prominent strikers and asked for their dismissal. Employers oppose the move, arguing workers cannot be spared. Students at the military academy demand closure until freedoms are granted, raising the crisis level.
Maddy Creek telephones report 19 year old Migg Viva Tipton took a large dose of carbolic acid and died about twelve hours later in Baker City Oregon. The deceased, Misa Tipton, lived with her grandparents on a farm and had shown no stated intention of suicide before the act.
Julia Massey known as Dude Cook was arrested in Bedford Indiana for perjury. Her testimony in the Shaffer case led to the arrest of Elmer Browning and witness Jack Acton.

As Senators arrived, Speaker Cannon presided with Senator Fry overseeing the electoral certificates. Fry announced Theodore Roosevelt as president and Chase Fairbanks as vice president by a vote of 396 to 140.
The State Department announced that San Domingo has ratified a protocol assigning financial responsibility to the United States. The document will be sent to the Senate next week and provides for US officials to manage the customs administration.
