City council debates submitting a water and power bonds measure to voters at the coming election. A charter rule delays any ordinance passage, prompting calls for a special meeting to place the question on the March ballot. Also notes three local disease cases and a fire of regional interest.
Prof. N. E. Henson of South Dakota Agricultural College returns after a six month tour across Northern Europe and Siberia for the US Department of Agriculture. He brings new foreign plants and short season cereals for testing in the northwest with SD experiment stations directing the testing. Australia coal shipments into California under Harriman railroads cost more per ton due to freight car shortages and locomotive limits, making imports cheaper despite higher base price.
Ottawa reports total Canadian immigration in 1906 reached 215 912, up 79 192 from 1905. British entrants numbered 98 267, continental 53 874, and United States 1.8? The United States immigration showed a significant annual rise.
St Johns February 2 The Newfoundland legislature convened in regular session today with consideration of railway finance and ship subsidies promising an unusually important and interesting session for the colony.
Scripps News Association reports Thomas Hueston of St Louis and Jerome Keogh of Buffalo will begin a series of matches tonight in New York to decide the world pool championship.
In New York on February 7 1907 Evelyn Nesbit testified about her relationship with Stanford White and her marriage to Harry K Thaw. She described meetings at Cafe Martin Madison Square Garden and Pittsburg visits including a night in White's studio where she was assaulted. The testimony covered threats proposals and Thaws reactions after hearing of White's misconduct.
At a La Grande Commercial Club meeting, a $2600 cash bonus was offered to Wilcox Lumber to locate a mill in or near the city. Wilcox, not interviewed, said decision expected in four to five days. The mill would boost local payroll and uses timber on Ladd creek. It plans a nine foot band saw with capacity over 50,000 feet daily.
The Ledger Democrat of Lastine merges with the Wallowa Sun to form the Wallowa Sun. The Wallowa News plans relocation to Enterprise this month. Socialists in La Grande nominate a city election slate led by A. M. Paul for mayor with council nominees listed.
Petitions are circulating to place Dr. A. L. Richardson on the city ticket for mayor and F. C. Meyers for councilman in the Third ward.
Portland mail is expected to arrive in La Grande this evening after using boats from Portland to Mosher due to the O R N line being impassable eastward. Rail service may resume once the Columbia River is navigable to Mosher and rails are passable.
