Fire on Transport Meade Kills Three Firemen in Ill-Fated Hold

A blaze aboard the transport Meade near Folsom Street sent 5 000 tons of cargo including commissary and quartermaster supplies to the Philippines. three officers died from suffocation and about twenty others, mainly firemen, were injured as heroic crews battled the flames. Eighteen thousand dollars in gold was saved from the inferno and soldiers aided in securing the vessel and cargo.
