A disturbance on Fir Street ends with Earl West firing a gun at Winchester grocery employees and bystanders. Police intervene as the assailant is stopped when a gun plug fails, saving Snodgrass Grocery. Local residents report fear and urgency as responders secure the scene.
Ray Baun of Bnodgrasa grocers escapes instant death when Earl West fires twice at a buggy on North Fir Street near Julius Fisher saloon. A faulty shell saves Baun as West reloads and Julius Fisher helps overpower him before police arrive. West, a drunken wood chopper, had previously drawn his gun two weeks earlier but fled before capture.
Jurors for the December term are excused indefinitely after Ellexson case. One inmate remains jailed on a Baker residence larceny charge but will not be tried now. A hung jury case will be reconsidered after the holidays.
Blaze in the Ber enna street area of New Orleans caused extensive damage estimated at 209000 dollars. Firefighters fought the flames as the inferno threatened the business district. Two deaths were reported among residents who perished in the blaze.

Judge Bean will render a final decision next week in the Caviness irrigation dispute on the Grande Ronde river at May Park. J L Caviness obtained a temporary restraining order last June granting prior irrigation rights. News of the judge’s approach was conveyed to Judge Knowles this afternoon.
Judge Knowles granted five extra days for Jess Parker of Elgin to file a motion for a new trial in the murder of William Porter after the ten day limit expired. Parker was found guilty of manslaughter and may use the additional time to prepare the motion.

Washington December 23. Representative Norris of Nebraska an insurgent predicts a renewed fight over house rules after the holiday recess. He will introduce a resolution to amend rules restricting motions to committees from consideration of bills. Hoe says they will attack the imperfect rules and fight harder than in March.
