Last night a fire alarm rang out on Spring Street at the home of Mr and Mrs Prescott. The blaze consumed the building and contents before the department arrived. A fine driving horse in the stable perished in the flames. A quantity of hay and feed was destroyed.
Fire destroys boggy and harnead with origin still unknown. Mr Prescott reports losses around $809, about half covered by insurance. Cited details indicate a damaging blaze and partial insurance coverage.
The University ensemble drew student praise for three songs and a canter number led by Mr Abbott and Mr Rountree. The mandolin group received strong applause for its performance, while pieces like Seminole and Lazy Bill impressed the audience.
Cheefoo December 16 The Bililetin reports a Japanese cruiser ashore at Yongehing bay southeast of Chesioo Tokio. It says the Russian battleship Reenstann is attacked by Japanese forces outside Port Arthur and is supported by a torpedo boat Orvasby and a crewed ship with unknown name. Official report notes a naval battle with torpedo boats missing and steady Japanese attacks on the Russian station. The Sevasto pol bow reportedly sinks further and its torpedo tube becomes submerged as of early morning today.
The Presbyterian ladies opened the largest bazaar in La Grande this afternoon at 2 o clock in the Armory Hall. Decorated booths display handkerchiefs aprons baby clothes candy dolls and a miscellaneous section with homey comforts and treats.
The Harney County court sets aside 1000 from the general land fund to collect and maintain an exhibit of local resources for the Lewis and Clark fair next year.
