Guilty pleas in Umatilla land fraud cases
In Portland on December 1 Federal Judge Wolverton accepted pleas of guilty from 15 to 20 defendants in the Umatilla reservation land frauds. Col Kaley of Pendleton pleaded for leniency and claimed innocence, while Henry McGinn entered a general plea of guilty. U S District Attorney John McCourt detailed how lands were obtained via contracts with settlers and prefiling fee payments, naming defendants including Kaley Crow Ross and Purks among others.
