In La Grande nine timber and stone filings are awaiting action after a U S land office message ordered local officials to await fuller instructions on accepting proofs under the new timber and stone regulation that began yesterday. Register Bramwell reports sparse guidance while proofs and applications pile up.
The Oregonian reports Secretary Garfield issued a regulation changing timber lands sold under the timber and stone act from a flat $2.50 per acre to a minimum price of that value. Prospective entrants must file an application with an affidavit of land contact and their own timber value estimate to gain a preference right. If appraisal lags, applicants may pay their own valuation and forfeit the right if payment is late. government appraisal can be challenged at applicant expense. The rule is not retroactive and does not affect existing entries.
