Plans call for a new cement walk in front and an expansion at the rear to house the express office. Contractors were asked to file bids with officials in Portland this week. Madrid letter promises fortune if Pendleton grocer shelters girl

A Pendleton grocer faces a curious Madrid to Medford to Pendleton tale. A letter from Luis Rodigues Crystal claims a $450,000 English draft fortune and asks the grocer to shelter the imprisoned man’s 14 year old daughter until she is of age, with a weekly interest, then split the estate. The plan includes funding to redeem a pig iron gate and transport the girl and chaplain from Madrid. The money’s existence remains unproven and unlikely.
