President Taft is set to sign the statehood bill as the Senate and House prepare it for signature. Arizona and New Mexico move toward joining the union, with opposition calls for veto and debates on fiduciary recalls.
Washington August 2 Speaker Clark and House Leader Underwood said they would support adjournment of Congress tonight after a conference. A majority of House members from both parties pushed to end sessions, agreeing to move to adjournment.
President Taft signed the joint statehood bill admitting Arizona and New Mexico. Vice President Sherman and Speaker Clark signed the measure, which then went to Taft for his signature. The territories can gain statehood after meeting conditions, including judiciary recall limits and other congressional stipulations.
In New York on August 21, 18 year old bellboy Paul Geldof faced trial for the murder of William Jackson, a millionaire broker. The defense reportedly has backing from a Hartford financier willing to fund over 50 dollars in sympathy with Geldel's mother. Geldel's lawyers proposed a guilty plea to second degree murder, which the district attorney rejected. Geldel wept openly during the proceedings.
Between now and October 1 about 4000 men in the operating contraction maintenance and motive power departments of the Southern Pacific railroad will be laid off. Slack freight traffic is given by the company as the reason. The men will be taken back gradually as freight increases.

San Bernardino reports indicate a mob plan to seize a dentist from jail and hold a meeting at the jail tonight. Sheriff rushed the prisoner to safety as a crowd gathered after read notices demanding the dentist’s release.
Taft accepts invitation to lay the cornerstone of San Francisco city hall and plans a Pacific coast trip this fall. He will visit Oregon Washington and California and leave Beverly around September 15.
Senator La Follette urged immediate government take over Alaska resources including railroads ships and public utilities. He called for a public board to develop coal mines wharves docks steamships and transportation from Controller Bay to the coal fields to cut costs and curb private monopolies.
Crowds gather in Chesterfield Court House as Henry Beattis Jr. pleads not guilty to wife murder. Judge Watson denies stay or indictment quash. Jury examination begins amid cheering spectators and defense plans to challenge statements by cousin Paul Beattie. A moving picture contract involving the dead woman’s teen mother is reported.
A 2300 volt line on a Union Oregon Light & Power high voltage derrick killed A Perkins who touched a chain as two men attempted to lower it to reach a dead horse. The companion escaped unharmed after moving the chain aside and authorities held a coroner's inquest absolving blame.
Upward of 30000 visitors gather in Indianapolis for the union of the colored Knights of Pythias supreme lodge and the Uniform Bank national encampment to be held this week. Booker T. Washington is slated to address the gathering tomorrow.
Aug 21 Pendleton Rev. John Reeves of the Methodist Episcopal Church South killed himself with a revolver in the woodshed after failing to provide for his wife and three children. His wife was preparing breakfast when the act occurred. He had been insured and had “won for 30.” Races train.
In Los Angeles on August 21 an aerial test run near the Pacific Electric line saw L. E. Holt of the Aero Nautical Society of California race a train at 45 miles per hour. Holt, aiming for a pilot’s license, finished the six-car event by two car lengths.

Oklahoma City hosts the annual encampment of Spanish-American War veterans with participants from most states and visiting nurses. J Lewia Smith of Washington DC is slated as commander in chief. Tampa Florida bids to host next year’s encampment.
Negotiations are under way to merge the Republican Iron and Steel Co Bethlehem Steel Co and the Lackawanna into a new trust. Schwab and William Corey, former heads of the U S Steel Trust, are backing the move. The consolidation would compete with United States Steel Corp.
