The city council awarded construction to Charles Baldwin and heating plumbing to J J Gleeson for the Carnegie Library project. Architects Wayland and Fen nell oversee the work which aims for occupancy by March 1 1909 after cost-saving alterations.

The Union County Court invites sealed bids for a wooden bridge over the main Catherine Creek channel on Mani Latreet in Union Oregon. Bids due August 22 1908 at noon with a five percent certified check. court may reject any or all bids. La Grande Oregon.
W W Curtis of Portland writes to the Observer enlightening the La Grande name origin. He explains Le Grande origin on maps, later corrected to La Grande, and links Grande Ronde valley to French explorers. Curtis cites Fremont and De Sinet sources and notes historical debate and the town’s naming history.
