New York reports the public pouring into rail stock amid a bull rush and warns of a looming panic if gains continue. Rockefeller reportedly took a hit from Harriman's pool while Southern Pacific and Union Pacific show sharp early movements with prices fluctuating from opening.
The special term of the New York State Supreme Court opened in Arc, Cortland County, to handle Chaster Gillette of Cortland charged with the murder of Grace Brown. The body was found in Big Moose Lake last month after a trip with Gillette. he says she was the survivor of an accidental boat upset.
The annual rifle revolver and carbine contest for Pennsylvania national guard teams opened at Mt Gretna range and will run five days with eleven matches. From the winners a twelve man team will be chosen to compete in the national match at Seagirt New Jersey starting September 4.
In Peoria Illinois on August 20 Judge Thompson leads the anti Sullivan faction claiming Bryan's wishes should be followed while a majority of delegates oppose Sullivan. He says delegates will not return to constituents wearing the Sullivan collar. Sullivan asserts near unanimous control within five hundred delegates.
Vice President Fairbanks reviewed the troops at Fort Benjamin Harrison today. He was escorted by cavalry and welcomed with a nine gun salute.
The Pacific Steamship Company received word the steamship Manchuria is ashore on a coral reef about three hundred yards off Honolulu. Later reports confirm the situation and say she may float off with the tide. The ship carries a full passenger list but no danger to passengers is cited.
The heaviest rain in years falls in the Ogden area with the Weber and Ogden rivers on a rampage. Official measurements show rainfall at about an inch per hour for the first two hours. By three o clock the rain eased but flooding remains widespread and property losses are reported.
The President, in a letter to Congressman Watson of Indiana, says he would not participate if only party issues were involved but believes citizens should value the work of the present Congress and the need to keep it organized. He warns that changing leadership now would hinder efforts on social industrial and economic problems of vital interest.

The funeral for the late Mrs. Fred Jacobs, who died yesterday afternoon at four, was held this afternoon at the Presbyterian church with Rev E B Hays officiating. Interment followed in the Masonic cemetery, and Mr Jacobs receives the community’s heartfelt sympathy.

William Thomas has murdered his wife in Pontia Illinois this morning and authorities report all efforts to capture him have so far failed.
President Roosevelt today hosts Fighting Bob Evans at Oyster Bay. Evans arrived aboard the Yankton and anchored near Roosevelt Place at noon. A grand naval review is planned and the President will entertain officers after the review.
Eight miners were killed and seven wounded in Usovka as government troops faced a clash this afternoon. Troops restored order and quelled the disturbance.
Right of Way Agent W J Snodgrass reports five car loads of steel have arrived at Union as the Central Railroad plans a line from Cove to Moss Chapel and into La Grande. Fifteen miles graded including Hot Lake spur, one farm rights of way nearly complete. Engineers to estimate right of way cost. three route options considered to minimize damage. Company aims to reach La Grande this fall to move beet crop and complete grading. citizens urged to support right of way.
In La Grande on Saturday the Grande Ronde Fruit Growers Union endorsed W. F. Ripley's plan for a pure food and vinegar factory to be built in the city. Members discussed a $5 per ton price for culls and small apples and several subscribers were noted. The group urged prompt action to handle this year’s crop and secure support for the new industry and payroll in the county and city.
The Pacific Coast Indian Institute opened its annual session in Tacoma Washington today August 20. The program emphasizes demonstration work by Indian pupils with several prominent figures in attendance including United States Commissioner of Indian Affairs Francis E Laupp and Estelle Reel national superintendent of Indian Schools.
