Paris rumor mill spreads claims of a German retreat to Belgium. French observers deny a decisive Allied victory and call the reports untrue. Officials and frontline reports emphasize no major German collapse or ordered strategic withdrawal has been confirmed.
Paris reports an official Allied favorable general operations review. The Somme turning movement gains pace and the Meuse ground loss at St Mihiel has been retaken. French forces operate east of the Meuse as German positions face withdrawal and possible isolation of Von Kluck and Von Buelow.
The 1914 world championship series starts in Philadelphia at Shibe Park with games on October 9 and 10 after the National Commission ruled two Games in one city. Philadelphia won the coin flip for the first game and a planned sequence keeps most games in Philadelphia before moving to Boston for games five and six. If needed a seventh game would be decided by coin flip.
German forces clash with Russian troops in Polish territory as Prussian lines push and Niemen combat continues. Petrograd reports German forces have been forced back after intense fighting.
In Petrograd officials announce the German offensive on the Niemen line is frustrated and the German forces are now in retreat across Suwalki province. They failed to seize roads through the Niemen forest area and are being pushed back at all points as March moves toward Cracow in Galicia.
German forces reinforced press the Russian army of General Rennenkampf in the Niemen corridor between the Niemen river and east Prussia. Fierce fighting centers near Ossowetz, Dreuskens ki, Augustowo as both sides seek the Grodno front and a northern forest outlet. Russians claim gains along the line while Rennenkampf forecasts Berlin by Christmas. Austrian lines falter as Russians advance through Galicia in two parallel waves toward Cracow.
Sept 30. Servians announce they have re occupied Semlin on the north bank of the Save in Slavonia after being driven out two weeks earlier by a large Austrian army. Crown prince forces reportedly seized Austrian fortifications in bayonet charges and the Austrian rear stores were abandoned. Servians pursue retreating Austrians as Belgrade siege prospects improve.
Military briefing reports Kaiser officials confirming siege of Antwerp has started and contemplating air raids from Zeppelin bases. Officials expect enormous disruption as German planners target Allied positions and coastal defences along the Channel.
German forces report no major change as they continue to advance slowly along the Meuse on the left of the center. The update notes gradual gains and persistent pressure in the ongoing battle line without marked breakthroughs.
Belgian war office report states Antwerp outer fortifications withstand weeks long range bombardment aimed at Waelheim and Wavre. Germans dismount two guns before bombardment ceases awaiting new mortars. attackers repulsed near Foisezele and Breedonck with heavy losses while German forces push east along railways and Rennenkampf’s Russians retreat in Suwalki district.
The Hague reports German siege artillery in place around Antwerp with thousands of refugees fleeing across the Dutch border. Railway links are cut, and the German general staff aims to seize Antwerp quickly to use it as a base for air and Zeppelin attacks on the British coast.
Athletic authorities at the high school announce the Saturday game with the Tomah Indians is canceled. Lanesboro high will be the opponent instead. Minnesota’s team last year was among the strongest in the southern part of the state and is rated highly this year.
German war office claims Colonel Gordon and Lieutenant Colonel Neish admitted British use of dum-dum bullets after being examined by a military commission. It also accuses Britain of violating neutrality by seizing neutral ships and alleges a British plane dropped a bomb at Maastricht, breaching Holland neutrality.
Berlin announces the death in action of Max Linder the famed cinematograph artist at the battle of the Aisne. Washington reports a Senate unanimous vote demanding details on British interference with copper shipments from the United States to Rotterdam in neutral bottoms. Tokyo confirms Japanese success at Kiao Chau capturing Lao She harbor near Tsing Tan and seizing four field guns.
Sept 30 in Chicago marks the annual reunion of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee with Civil War veterans present. Gov. B. Ne of Illinois, Archbishop Ireland of Minnesota, Gen. John C. Black and Bishop Fallows spoke as guests and speakers at the event.
Lucas Tomasek died Monday night while fleeing a downpour after attending a Bohemian Benevolent Society meeting. His widow, Katherine Tomasek, aged 77, died the following night at their home on 427 South Eighth Street. The Austro-Hungarian emigrants lived most of their lives in La Crosse. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 PM from the couple’s home, with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Three children survive.
Washington Sept 30 The senate elections committee resumed considering the Norris resolution to investigate alleged large expenditures by Roger Sullivan of Illinois and Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania to secure nominations in the recent senatorial primaries. The Pennsylvania primary was the special order of business.
Pekin Sept 30 The Japanese legation declares the fall of the German fortified positions at Kiao Chau is imminent. British and Japanese land forces have silenced the outer land forts and isolated the position. Bombardment continues and heavy ships’ guns have silenced two harbor forts. German warships may attempt to run the blockade as a squadron of battleships and armored cruisers waits.
Italian Ambassador instructed to demand that Austria stop mining Adriatig at once. Refusal expected as answer. Mines are the only things which have kept Austrian fleet safe under guns of Pela Forts.
Rome Sept 30 Italy orders formal protest to Vienna demanding Austria stop laying mines in the Adriatic. The minister of marine reports no confirmation of a sinking torpedo boat rumor but says the incident is being investigated. Italy cites mining as endangering hundreds of fishing vessels and vows action if Austria does not halt.
Sept 30 official reports show the Japanese fleet bombing harbor forts at Kiao Chau. Japanese and British land forces drive Germans from an outer ring of forts and take numerous prisoners.
Yesterday’s high 79 and low 50. Dry conditions prevail with fair weather across Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa tonight and Thursday. Moderate Gulf SW and Montana disturbances present while high pressure settles over the lake region. Overall, temperatures hold with little change and light to no precipitation in the region.
