President Roosevelt, after an eight hour meeting with key advisers, released a public reply to William Jennings Bryan's request for proof that Oklahoma Governor C N Haskell is unfit to be Democratic treasurer. The advisers joined the president from late morning until dinner.
Chairman Hitchcock leaves Chicago for New York to confer with Senator Murray Crane on raising funds as Roosevelt supporters rally. Hitchcock plans westward tours and expects a sentiment shift while Gov. Cummins meets him and heads to Iowa to join a Taft campaign train at Clinton.
The president questioned Col. W C Haskell about links to Standard Oil and bribery allegations involving Ohio figures. Haskell denied any connection and the president excused him, while aides noted Bryan would receive all he asked. Roosevelt declined to comment further on the Ohio matter.
Adlai E. Stevenson, the most prominent living Democrat by office held, re-enters politics as a Democratic candidate for governor of Illinois. The former vice president pursues a dignified, peaceful campaign consistent with his public record and personality.
City Health Officer Murphy received a state laboratory report on artesian and public wells. Results show three bacteria percent at 99 degrees, 700 at 60 degrees, and no acid producing bacteria. Findings viewed as gratified and indicate low pollution levels despite natural bacterial life.
At Douglas Sept 24 P D Stirling's car crashed into a wall demolishing the vehicle and injuring two occupants as the Royal Auto race opened. G E Hutton escaped serious harm after his car hit a wall. Reed and Robinson incidents plus several minor crashes marked the event. Watson won the 28 mile race in 6 hours 43 minutes with multiple injuries reported among drivers and medics.
Aldermen Gus Keller and Joseph Houska returned from the meeting last evening reporting a fine time. Mayor Anderson will stay over until tomorrow to attend a meeting of the vice presidents and discuss future plans. John Burns was elected a member of the executive committee.
New York stock exchange officials expelled A. O. Brown and L. G. Young of A. O. Brown & Co. following an August 23 investigation into Wall Street gambling activities.
Taft arrives in Beloit and Milwaukee as crowds gather for his Hippodrome speech. Gov. James E. Davidson presides in Milwaukee while Taft plans stops at West Allis Racine and Janesville before the Chicago talk. Taft defends court rulings on labor and vows no change in stance. La Follette accompanies Taft in Madison remarks.
A Cincinnati report describes Mrs. William Howard Taft as heart and soul in her husband’s presidential canvass. The piece portrays her as pleasant, sociable, and totally devoted to Taft’s success, asserting she believes in his abilities and aims for the best for him.
New York reported a 1 to 1 tie between the Chicago and New York Nationals with President Pulliam upholding the result. The Cubs prepared to play, Chance warned of forfeiture if New York did not show, and a large crowd watched amid police presence. Giants refused to replay the first game, while Cleveland fans followed the AL race as Chicago nears second, with Cleveland pressing the leader.
At Columbus Bryan says he will study the president’s telegram reply about Haskell as a Standard Oil agent and answer any questions. At Guthrie Haskell denies resigning as treasurer of the Democratic National Committee calling reports a damn lie.
The funeral of Hon. Robert Lees was held yesterday in Alma Wisconsin with the local ceremony. All high school pupils marched to the graveyard and many out of town guests attended including Mrs J T Robb Winona Andrew Lees La Crosse Ed Lees Winona Mrs J More Winona George Lees St Paul Mrs N Fetter St Paul Mrs Alex Lees Mondovi Mr and Mrs Andrew Bartch Fountain City and Mr George Bartch Cross.
Lun fenholtz, a small town of several hundred, was destroyed by wildfires. Residents fled through burning woods to escape. Other nearby towns face threats as fires continue to threaten the region.
Board directors meet this morning to decide on profit sharing for the upcoming Interstate Fair. Officials expect crowds to respond if the plan is approved.
A large crowd attended the fair with special trains from Tomah Viroqua and Austin. A 25 cent adult admission was set for tomorrow to share profits. Three killed and many injured when a Frisco passenger train derailed near Carthage en route to St Louis. The engine’s connecting rod broke, tearing up track and sending the engine and a fireman to their deaths as a smoking car and Pullman plunged down a 60 foot embankment into the Spring river.
La Crosse records 60 milder morning and 82 warmest temperature with 8 mph winds and no rainfall. The 24th day of September sees no rain and the river remains nearly stationary with La Crosse at 1.9 feet and Prairie du Chien at 2.0 feet. Forecasts: Wisconsin partly cloudy with possible showers tonight or Friday. Minnesota and Iowa also expect showers or unknown, cooler in the northwest portions.
