Gardner R. Withrow of La Crosse defeated Rep. William H. Stevenson for the GOP nomination by a 1,340 vote margin in the 10 Wisconsin counties counted. Withrow led 19,864 to 18,524 with 10,061 for third candidate Carl Neprud. Stevenson denied plans for an independent run.

Funeral services for Flight Officer Otto W. Bey of 1533 Mississippi Street will be at Our Saviors Lutheran Church Friday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. A powerful hurricane with 100 mile per hour winds plowed over Lake Okeechobee toward Florida’s citrus belt.
