Storm near hurricane strength threatens southern Florida with 60 mph winds while floods worsen in Louisiana Mississippi Alabama and northwest Florida following a major hurricane. Reports detail drowned victims in Jefferson parish and widespread sewer contamination as Lake Okeechobee faces danger from ongoing heavy rains and ruptured dikes.

He would not reveal names but said many were in the 1944 MacArthur organization and will be pledged to favorite sons on the first ballot at the 1948 Republican convention.
The agriculture department estimated that last week's hurricane caused Florida citrus losses of five to seven million boxes in total. Grapefruit losses are four to five million boxes and oranges one to two million boxes.
