HOKOHAMA Pvt. Joseph E. Hirswa, under 30-year sentence for the slaying of two Japanese last November, escaped from Tokyo hospital and is at large. A Wallington, New Jersey, private once condemned to death but commuted by President Truman, had been sent to the hospital after swallowing two nails in the stockade carpenter shop. No escape details were given.

Judd Lawson a Greensburg Pennsylvania truck driver remains unconscious in Richland Center hospital after being struck by a car on highway 56 near Eckelberry corners seven miles east of Viola. The Sparta vehicle traveling east is believed to have blinded by truck lights. Lawson is in critical condition with a skull fracture and multiple injuries. His wife and two children await updates while his father travels by airplane to Richland Center.
