Churchill accuses Britain's Labor government of causing bitter political strife. He urges unity to face Communist threats at home and abroad as a steel by barge shipment of 300 tons docks Tuesday.
A barge carrying about 500 tons of sheet steel for the Trane Co. is due at the Black River terminal marking the first non coal shipment via the dock completed in 1943. The move promises significant savings, as barge rates run about half of rail rates, with Trane planning future deliveries depending on material allocations.

Balloting in La Crosse's 21 wards by noon Tuesday stood near the 1948 primary level with 1,701 votes cast citywide. County and city officials noted heavy activity, predicted around 14,151 total votes, and urged voters to use early polling to avoid late congestion while absentee ballots reached 735 statewide.
Allied forces race to cross the Han River toward Seoul as Marine led units push from Inchon and seizing Waegwan and Kasan. South Koreans enter Pohang while Red forces retreat toward the capital amid tank and airlift support at Kimpo and Inchon.

The United States Britain and France announced they would permit the western German government to organize mobile police formations to counter subversive Communist activity. The Big Three outlined broader steps to end the wartime state and advance German integration into a Western defense framework. They pledged support for UN efforts to resist threats to peace and prepared to revise occupation rules to empower West Germany with a foreign ministry and diplomatic relations. They also ordered the occupation high commission to lift shipbuilding and steel production limits pending a study of industrial constraints. Berlin policy was to be reviewed as part of these measures.
A Sparta meeting on a possible $190 million federal housing project for Camp McCoy area heard plans for 1200 new houses for military personnel. Of the total, 312 will be at the old camp site and 888 spread across Sparta Tomah La Crosse and West Salem. Local officials and builders discussed financing labor and materials with a civilian defense official noting a 28 to 36 week training period and local financing aims.
French army communique reports Viet Minh forces newly armed in China attacked the Dong Khe outpost on the Chinese frontier. The town fell after a bitter three day fight, with attackers' exact identity not fully known and possible Chinese Communist involvement unclear.
