Officials from Campbell and Medary report countywide census estimates showing a 4.7 percent rise in La Crosse County while most towns decline. Campbell population fell from 2 296 to 1 860, a 19 percent drop, and Medary declined from 1 563 to 1 450, a 7.2 percent drop.
U S military sources report North Vietnamese infiltration into South Vietnam appears to be easing but August estimates still reach about 20 000. May 30 000 June 20 000 July 30 000 all estimates. Campbell Island shows housing and population growth with 731 dwellings in 1961 rising to 931 by 1966 and an estimated population over 3 200.
Washington AP. A new administration and a potential House majority are set for a full scale review of the Internal Revenue Code. Rep. Wilbur Mills and Rep. John Byrnes both favor weeks of hearings to overhaul tax laws not comprehensively reviewed since 1954. Possible topics include capital gains, estate and gift taxes, foundations regulation, and business tax avoidance through organizational restructuring.
Atty. Gen. Ramsey Clark opened eight weeks of hearings by urging stiff gun controls and restrained police action at protests. He warned that police violence and the gun legacy risk death and fear. FBI Director Hoover followed as the commission outlined steps for crowd handling and minimizing force while studying violence nationwide.
A La Crosse Common Council committee found damage to Central High School overrated after a tour. They plan a public hearing Sept 30 to assess vandalism with testimony from city officials and school representatives and to consider an appraisal by Peter Nelson and Son contractors.
In Minnesota two men from Alexandria died in separate Monday crashes. William Wicken, 54, died in a Minneapolis hospital after a collision on Highway 55 with a livestock truck driven by Marvin Bjorklund, 55. Lyle Griffith, 71, died three hours after the same crash in Greenfield. The year’s highway toll rose to 737.
Governor Knowles named Omer O. Nelson of Ashland to the Consumer Credit Review Board replacing George Moniza for a term ending May 1973. He also appointed Flagler J. Flinchbaugh of Danbury to the Minnesota Wisconsin Boundary Area Commission succeeding Charles E. Sundquist of Grantsburg.
Rog er Dedmond had his murder conviction dismissed after Lee Roy Martin, 31, pleaded guilty to the 1967 killing of Lucille Dedmond and received a life term. Martin admitted to strangling Opal Buckson, 15, and faces additional murder charges for two other Gaffney victims. Dedmond had awaited a new trial and was released on bond.
Margaret Goschke, 19, was arrested on a second degree murder warrant in the death of her newborn girl. The infant died at a local hospital from multiple injuries. Autopsy cited nonaccidental injuries. Goschke claimed the baby was born at 4:30 am. She will be arraigned after hospital release.
Veteran Broadway and film star Franchot Tone died at his Manhattan East Side home at age 65. Tone, who began on Broadway in 1928, later split his career between Hollywood and the stage and appeared in noted works such as Fifth Column and A Moon for the Misbegotten. He was married several times to Joan Crawford and other actresses, with two divorces and tragic separations marking his personal life.
