Indonesian demonstrators attacked the British Embassy in Jakarta looting and setting it on fire. Troops moved to quell the civil unrest as fires burned a three story building and protests spread to residences of embassy staff.
Cindy stalled over southeast Texas dumped extreme rainfall up to 22.76 inches at Deweyville and 18 inches in Orange with Beaumont at 15. Thousands fled homes as floods rose. rescue trucks and boats moved people to higher ground. Civil Defense and Red Cross evacuated hundreds while schools opened to shelter flood victims.
In Washington AP reports a strong civil rights bill forms in the House Civil Rights subcommittee. It adds to Kennedy seven part plan and faces stiffer Republican opposition on a proposed ban on racial discrimination. The panel weighs public accommodations and a possible fair employment practices provision as an amendment.
A bus piled into a train at a crossing near Salinas killing twenty two workers and injuring many more. The victims were braceros returning from a celery field to a labor camp operated by Earl Meyers Co. Driver Francisco Espinosa faces felony manslaughter charges while investigators sort identifications and passports.
Funeral services memorials are arranged for the four Negro girls killed in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing. Denise McNair 11 Addie Mae Collins 14 Cynthia Wesley 14 and Carole Rosamond Robertson 14 are honored as national leaders call for a day of mourning. In a Volograd farm meeting Khrushchev criticized inefficiency and fertilizer waste. He urged higher mineral fertilizer output, warned about exporting grain, and noted drought and Virgin Lands issues. He scolded farm directors for hoarding fertilizer and dismissed irrigation pipe demands.
Washington AP The 190 million federal aid and construction program to supply fallout shelters for 11 million Americans heads to the Senate with Civil Defense officials cautiously optimistic. The Kennedy administration measure won House approval with surprising ease despite GOP attempts to strip 175 million for public and nonprofit shelter construction, vote 172 to 67.
Mrs. Andrew Fischer, mother of quintuplets, spoke at a news conference from St. Luke's Hospital as the four girls and a boy, born two months premature, gained strength. Doctors expect two months more hospital stay and noted gifts totaling about 75000 in value.
Gov. John W. Reynolds announced the signing of contracts for a new gymnasium at La Crosse State College costing over $1.5 million. The George Madsen Construction Co. of Minneapolis holds the general contract for 1,124,000 dollars with La Crosse firms securing plumbing heating electrical and steam service work.
Mrs. Mildred Weigley Wood, former head of home economics at the University of Minnesota, was found dead in Phoenix Arizona. The university said she died of natural causes likely Sunday with findings reported Tuesday night. She led the home economics division from 1917 to 1922 and earned bachelor and master degrees from Minnesota. After leaving Minnesota she taught in Arizona and wrote textbooks on home economics and family life. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Mauston area leaders announce subscription of 282322 dollars to fund a 2.82 million food processing plant. Financing comes from selling 20 year 5 percent debentures. Ore Ida Foods Inc will operate the plant in Mauston.
