President Taft drew a large La Crosse crowd of about twenty thousand including many schoolchildren. He arrived late but greeted cheering citizens as he arrived at the Milwaukee depot and attended the dedication of the new Y M C A building.
President Taft defends the Payne tariff bill and praises Minnesota Congressman Jim Tawney despite intense regional opposition. Taft calls the bill a downward tariff revision and argues insurgents who voted against it abandoned the party.
President Taft arrives in Minneapolis at 7 45 AM and tours the city with stops at the Commercial Club and Fort Snelling before heading to St Paul for a capitol visit. Critics say his tariff stance risks his political future while insurgent opponents cheer his efforts.
Friends of Senator Beveridge in Indianapolis denounce President Taft after his attack on Beveridge and other insurgents last night claiming Taft hurled a boomerang.
In Des Moines Iowa on Monday Senator Cummins declined to comment on President Tafts attack on insurgents at Winona saying social obligations prevent reply to statements about Payne measure opponents. Cummins is set to lead the greeting for the president during his Des Moines visit.

Goddard a Yale student and husband of Lucinda M Treat 70 was heard in police court on perjury charges He allegedly lied about his bride age claiming she was 36 when she was 70 The Treat family estate valued at about 40000 prompted probate guardianship action by E A Treat her son last Sept 9 The couple’s troubles peaked as Goddard was jailed despite Lucinda Treat's pleas.
Chicago firms Elgin and Waltham announce a price rise on watches due to the new tariff bill. The general increase targets watches previously selling 50 to 55 dollars, with eight dollar models moving to nine dollars. The companies deny tariff as the sole cause.
Pittsburg September 18 The petition filed by New York attorney James G. Graham asks the court to grant Thaw's creditors the right to have him declared sane in order to determine his liability and possible remedies.

Nels Pederson, a longtime La Crosse saloon operator at Winnebago and Fifth streets, died this morning at La Crosse Lutheran hospital after a prolonged pneumonia illness. He was unmarried. funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Pittsburg, Sept 18 An appeal to the supreme court in the case of Helen Boyle who was sentenced to 25 years in the western penitentiary for the kidnapping of Billy Whitla from Sharon Pa is being drawn by attorney Stephen G Peter of Pittsburg.
