Maine voters repudiated Republican rule for the first time in thirty years sending Democrats to nationwide power. The Hale machine suffered a crushing defeat as Taft’s political prospects waned and prospects for Taft running again dimmed. The state gives the party full control including the legislature and Congressmen.
Washington dispatch reports critical Panama situation with recall of R O Marsh acting as charge and Minister Dawson to assume duties on scene. Goethals backs Marsh, department silent, Mendoza rival candidate cited, Charles Campbell named successor for Marsh in Panama role.
In Maine on September 13 results show the entire State ticket elected with Democrats winning three of four congressional seats. The fourth district remained contested as recounts edge toward a Democratic victory. In Racine Wisconsin Edward Severn a 14 year old errand boy was instantly killed when his head was caught between a beam and the elevator floor at the Belle City Basket company plant. The accident occurred as he allegedly used the freight elevator despite orders not to. He had previously escaped drowning when his two brothers died a year earlier.
Madison Wis Sept 3 Col O G Munson private secretary to Gov Davidson denied that the governor was asked to send troops to capture John Dietz of Cameron Dam He said he had not heard from Sheriff Madden of Winter and did not think a soldiers demand would be granted even if made The governor believes peace officers can capture Dietz with a posse if they truly want him.
Washington voters face a pivotal primary as Miles Poindexter, termed the arch insurgent, appears set for Republican Senate nomination amid a contest featuring regulars John L. Wilson James L Ashton and Thomas Burke. Taft forces back Burke to oppose Poindexter.
Gen J Warren Keifer replies to Col Theodore Roosevelt on fortifying the Panama Canal saying the move violates the 1901 Hay-Paunceforte treaty. Keifer, returning from Brussels where he urged non fortification, clarifies the amendment was not adopted.

Spokane dispatch reports Wm A Clark believes Roosevelt will be the next Republican candidate for president barring unforeseen events. He says Roosevelt is grooming for 1912 and cannot see another nominee. Clark predicts Harmon will be Democrat choice and would contest Roosevelt. Johnson of Minnesota would have been a strong Democratic rival if alive.
Arizona reports Democrat gains in yesterday's primaries with 29 of 52 convention seats likely Democratic. Labor support for pro initiative and recall clauses boosted Democratic strength. Missouri also forecasts Democratic victories in November after Maine landslide.
