President Roosevelt writes to an old Montana friend that he supports Taft’s victory. William Jennings Bryan reacts with a mix of amusement and wary caution as the political landscape shifts.
President Roosevelt writes to Conrad Kohrs of Helena endorsing Taft as the right man for the presidency and urging reform without excess. Bryan tours Baltimore and Annapolis reacting to Roosevelt's letter, noting Taft's own positions on labor and law.
In Augusta on September 14 voters cast ballots in a statewide election with heavy anticipated turnout. Republican candidate B. M. Fernald aimed for a governor win, while Democrats backed Obadiah Gardner for a substantial plurality. Despite excitement, no disorders were reported as Taft Gardner groups appear in some areas supporting the Democratic ticket.
New York dispatch reports Tammany moved to Rochester as the state democratic convention opened. Six special trains carried Braves and supporters to the wigwam, creating the largest turnout for the convention in memory.
Rockford reports show attendance of 25319 for the season with President Elliott citing higher than required figures while Moll notes a 25 percent rise in attendance across towns. Fond du Lac and Freeport fell short, bad weather early in the year hurt totals yet later games boosted overall turnout beyond 23,000 in most towns.
The Manufacturers and Doers Union announces a monumental Waukon excursion next Thursday hailed as the greatest yet. New participants include Jus Crosse Telephone Company represented by Edward Conway. Inquiries and tickets available via secretary Calvert by phone.
Rumors circulated in financial circles today that a holding company would be formed to take over the securities and other companies owned by the Union Pacific. No official confirmation could be obtained and reports were largely ridiculed. Another rumor suggested the Union Pacific might relinquish Central Pacific control, which banking circles likewise dismissed.
The La Crosse and Madison clubs held a celebratory banquet closing a successful season. President Elliott presided, with speeches by Mevan and Hawley praising players and management. Several players plan moves to higher leagues while others, like Tracey and Watson, head home for winter.
Reverend Irish of the First Methodist Church in La Crosse was today named district superintendent for the Ashland district by the Wisconsin conference. W L Cunningham and F L Hart move to West Avenue M E Church in La Crosse, while A Ze Inham succeeds W L Wood at Caledonia Street M E Church in North La Crosse.
An excursion train returning to Laporte and Indianapolis was rear-ended by an eastbound Lake Shore theater train near Chesterton in dense fog. Three died including Esther Hecox of Chicago and an unknown man. About forty were injured, with thirty taken to Chicago Mercy Hospital. Officials from Lake Erie & Western and Lake Shore conduct a joint investigation.
In Towa on Sept 14 a standpatters conference of about a hundred leaders will choose a nominee. Ex governor Jackson declines a senatorial bid against Cummins, while James Wilson and Robert Cousins appear as favored picks for the ticket.
Saratoga dispatch reports a Republican convention in doubt over Governor Hughes. Elihu Root, a leading ally, refuses to present his name. He argues Democrats cannot rule in Congress and attacks Bryan while defending Taft era policies. The scene centers on party unity and primary reform concerns.
