United Press reports the return of progressives to the Republican fold yields a GOP sweep in Maine’s gubernatorial, senatorial, and congressional races. The GOP claims a large majority, aided by strong gains in the state legislature, while Democrats argue the vote margin was not as large as in past campaigns.
London reports a large Allied assault on Bulgarian lines north of Maladan with French and British forces taking trenches on a two mile front. Salonika confirms Yenimeh captured as Greek reports say the northward drive from Salonika has begun and Bulgars retreat toward eastern Macedonia.
Greek Premier Zaimas resignations confirmed amid Balkan offensives. UK, Serbian, and French forces drive Bulgarians back on left and capture villages. Greece edges toward war as Vienna and Berlin discuss postures. Yenimah taken by French and allies.
At Yeoman hall a planned reorganization for Farmers Cooperative Packing faced no action due to lack of a quorum. The board set October 17 for a new meeting to attempt ratification of a plan to form a $100,000 company taking over assets at $50,000 in value with $50,009 of stock offered to current holders. A test vote showed roughly two to one in favor of reorganizing.
Berlin reports growing German dissatisfaction with the new government food department. Cards for bread sugar fats milk eggs and dried vegetables are issued, while shortages of marmalade cheese tin and rubber hurt home canning. Milk delivery rules favor families with children and the sick.
From early returns covering 3 percent of precincts, Republicans win every major race. Frederick Hale leads over Democrat Charles F. Johnson for the long term senate by about 19,000, Bert M. Fernald over Ken nett H C M Sills by about 13,000 for the short term, and Carl E. Milliken is elected governor by about 13,000. All four congressional nominees appear victorious though Maine’s Second district remains tight and could shift. The state posts its largest vote in 36 years, exceeding 148,000, with a Republican overall majority smaller than hoped.
The Polish Association of America opened its annual convention in Milwaukee with Archbishop Sebastian G. Messmer presiding at a solemn high mass at St. Stanislaus Church aided by Milwaukee’s Polish priests.
Madison dispatch reports demobilization plans for Wisconsin state troops on the border. The Illinois and Wisconsin regiments complete a 170 mile hike from San Antonio to Austin and return by October 5. Authorities indicate a shift to muster out by company, hinting at an early recall or winter demobilization.
