Bronson La Follette wins Democratic gubernatorial nomination and faces Warren Knowles in November. Leonard to run against Gaylord Nelson for the U S Senate. Warren claims 56 percent in GOP primary. turnout 482000, the smallest since 1944.
Lynn E. Stalbaum won the Democratic primary in Wisconsin's First District over Jerald Maiers, earning a rematch against Rep. Henry C. Schadeberg. Schadeberg led with 21,137 votes to Stalbaum's 18,140 as Maiers urged US withdrawal from Vietnam.
Incumbent Norbert Nuttelman held his La Crosse County assembly seat in a tight 3,356 to 2,822 win over Patrick Zielke in the 2nd District. In the 1st District Gerald Greider defeated D. Russell Wartinbee 3,059 to 2,128, with Lloyd White also polling. Zielke pledged to run again, while Wartinbee blamed cross over voting for losses.
Veteran Republican Raymond C. Rice and five Assembly incumbents lost renomination bids in a statewide primary. Milo G. Knutson defeated Rice for Senate in La Crosse, while Assemblymen G. K. Anderson and D Russell Wartinbee fell in Wisconsin races. Democratic contenders Edward Mertz and Frank E Schaeffer plus Richard Lynch also drew charges. The results reshaped committees as Nile Soik moved toward a Senate seat, with James C. Devitt and Myron P. Lotto winning further nominations for state offices.
In a tight Republican primary, Milo G. Knutson defeated incumbent State Senator Raymond C. Bice by 1,587 votes. Knutson carried La Crosse County narrowly and benefited from Democratic crossover in several towns. Knutson, former La Crosse mayor and WKTY news director, pledged to strive under new conditions. Bice, serving since 1953, acknowledged the voters' change and praised his opponent while expressing surprise at losses in La Crosse County. See KNUTSON, Page 2.
An Air France Caravelle crashed into the Mediterranean off Nice killing 95 aboard including Gen. Rene Cogny who led French troops in North Vietnam during Dien Bien Phu. The jet was en route from Ajaccio to Nice and fire aboard was reported before the crash.
BAGLEY Minn AP Han guard Township in Clearwater County reported seven eligible voters when polling closed by midafternoon. Four ballots went to Democratic Farmer Labor candidates and two to Republicans. Election judges rejected the seventh ballot, yielding the first returns of the day.
Precinct by precinct tabulations show how La Crosse County voted in the Remaries Tuesday. The data appears on pages 8 and 15, presenting local voting results.
Randolph swept the Republican nomination over former assistant DA Stoltz in a low turnout primary, winning 7,057 to 4,213 and carrying most precincts. Stoltz praised Randolph while noting the tough race, and Democratic nominee Galen Pittman drew 1,740 votes. Countywide, Esther Domke led the ticket with 10,893 votes as GOP incumbents ran strong in a high share of county and state races.
