A British information officer said the Palestine railway was cut in 50 places and oil flow to Haifa disrupted. Two people were killed as explosions and gunfire occurred in various sections of the Holy Land during the opening of British Arab talks in London.
Officials report a string of incidents across the region including railway damage near Jerusalem and Jaffa, oil line attacks from Haifa, and the destruction of a Haifa signal tower. A British corporal was fatally wounded as the area remains under siege with a 12:47 am siren and daytime curfew. Officials say Britain may invite the Jewish agency to participate in talks on terms, but will first seek broader Jewish attendance.
Felix F. Wettengel, Appleton insurance counselor, arrives for a state petition challenging McCarthy's nomination to senate while serving as circuit judge. He cites that the secretary of state may print his name only if the court grants leave to file and then determines jurisdiction and merits.
Clifford W. Dahl of Viroqua and Maurice L. Bogie of 1925 Prospect Street collided at Third and Cass streets at 1 26 a m Sunday. Dahl drove south on Third while Bogie turned left onto Third, causing about 75 dollar damage to the Dahl car and 25 to the Bogie car. Alfred A. Ellefson of R La Crosse and Charles A. Raubik of 1509 Johnson Street collided at Seventh and Hood streets Saturday at 6 p m, with about 15 dollar damage to Ellefson and 75 to Raubik. None of the four drivers were injured.

Charles Schaefer proprietor of Beaner and Dick's tavern in La Crosse reported being struck on the head and robbed of about 500 dollars in cash after closing. He was taken to hospital with possible skull fracture and jaw injuries. A cast iron weapon was found in his car and a watch and keys missing. Police pursue a wide investigation.
The AFL seamen strike widens its reach as 90,000 unionists refuse to work until wage cuts are scrapped. Lundeberg says no return until Washington approves negotiated increases, while labor secretary Hannah fails to broker a settlement. The war stabilization board plans a Washington meeting to revisit limits on wage hikes.
Herb Lattimer of Genoa donated the 100 pound sturgeon to Riverside park pool after a lengthy fight to land it. The prize vanished Sunday night after 10:30 p m from the pool near the fish hatchery, a 12 pound sturgeon was found dead. Fisheries officials fear prosecution if the thief is found.
Paris report says foreign ministers council backed a Soviet proposal to delay the UN General Assembly's Sept 23 meeting in New York for one month to avoid clashing with the Paris peace conference. They plan to meet in New York next month to present peace treaties for Italy Romania Hungary Bulgaria and Finland and begin drafting treaties for Germany and Austria. The United States did not join the postponement request.
Three year old Madeline Tobias was found safe in Terre Haute Indiana after being abducted by a maid who admitted kidnapping. The child was recovered by Elmer Funkhouser who recognized her from newspaper photos. The kidnapper known as Mildred Everett or Mildred King confessed and will be held for Kansas City authorities. The Tobias family flew to Terre Haute to reclaim their daughter and plan to return home.
UNRRA disclosed rails originally earmarked for China were redirected to Yugoslavia amid an embargo on Chinese relief shipments except food. Senator Bridges pressed for answers, citing alleged Yugoslav UNRRA orders and prior priority arrangements with the War Assets Administration.
Democratic senate candidate Howard J. McMurray told a regional UAW CIO conference that Democrats stand firm from top to bottom. Walter P. Reuther addressed delegates at a closed session. Regional Director Joseph Mattson praised the union for mobilizing to reinstate OPA. Allis Chalmers Local 248 president Robert Buse lauded solidarity among farm workers, UAW, and United Electrical Workers during the strike. Other speakers were Paul M. Russo and Victor Cook.
Pete Kannelakas of 114 North Third street reported to police that thieves stole his brother Gus wreath and tossed another wreath into the gutte. Pete said he and Gus had placed wreaths on their business doors after their brother died last week.

Paris reports Britain renounced its claims to about 11 billion dollars in reparations from Italy. It reserved the right to seize Italian assets in the UK and colonies to satisfy war damage claims, valuing Italian assets at no more than 10 million dollars. The move aims to show support for Italy's reconstruction efforts.

A chase ends with three arrests James Cameron 68 George Bryant 46 both of St Paul and Mrs Stella Lewis 71. Police recover 141 dollars and purses. two pursued in a car with Minnesota plates. The trio face Jackson county jail and St Paul police warrants.
Heavy selling pressured the New York stock market to a yearlong low with declines of 1 to 11 points. Ticker delays disrupted early trading as offerings intensified. Midday dips and reduced activity followed with some gains near the close. Major losers included Hiram Walker, Schenley, DuPont, Eastman Kodak, Union Carbide, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific.

Zeiss optical works directors say Russians occupy Jena have seized about 24 million dollars worth of finished products since occupation for repairs. They report 12,000 workers at 1939 capacity 75 percent of wartime output with 30 percent bomb damage. Most production goes to Russia, with small shares to interzonal trade and Germany. Americans also removed about 5.5 million dollars worth of equipment and many directors and scientists left.
In Trieste a pro Yugoslav demonstration defied a military government ban and sparked clashes with U. S. and Allied police. Seven Americans and one Briton were injured as orders to disperse were carried out and shore leave was canceled for crews aboard the Huntingon and British ships. Gorizia saw a similar, uneventful dispersal by American troops.
The 88th division headquarters at Gorizia said six Yugoslav train guards were detained in Trieste after a dynamite bomb explosion early today. Police held them three quarters of a mile from the blast with five hand grenades in possession.
A grenade was tossed from a window in the San Giacomo district injuring a British officer. Jacino suffered a leg wound from a steel fragment. Three soldiers were hospitalized. American MPs arrested two suspects after raiding the grenade source. Names of hospitalized GIs from the 88th division include Pfc Edward Kastremski, Pfc Frank Mortimer, and Corp Clark B. McMahon. At least 12 civilians wounded as 5,000-strong crowd clashed with police. Gen Sir John Harding protested Yugoslav road interference affecting Allied traffic in the Pola zone.
Chicago reports continuing meat shortage with Record low hogs and cattle receipts for a normal Monday. Western markets show some uptick but arrivals are mostly grass fed or stock cattle resold to farmers for feeding to better beef grades.
Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey said the atomic bombing of Hiroshima was an unnecessary experiment and a mistake to drop the weapon, speaking at a Buffalo news conference. He argued the first atomic bomb revealed a weapon to the world when not needed.
