Twelve-year-old Ronald Zoerb suffered third degree burns on his hands arms and thighs after de natured alcohol ignited while he and David Brown lit a match in a garage at Brown's residence. The measure funds relief efforts with a $700 appropriation through January 1 and names McCoy as relief chair. Col. Bullard discussed housing for servicemen families at Camp McCoy with possible DoD support.
Carl W. Thompson of Stoughton Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial hopeful will be guest of honor at a 6 30 p m Hotel Stoddard dinner hosted by the La Crosse County Democratic Organizing Committee. Attending with Thompson will be William Sanderson U S senator Assemblyman Patrick Lucey and Ferryville third district congressional candidate George Haber man Wisconsin AFL head George Hall says labor will be represented by Donald Yolton UAW CIO. A public 8 30 p m Crystal room meeting at Hotel Stoddard will follow the dinner where Thompson will speak.
In a Labor Day speech, Senator McKellar of Tennessee argued that all classes, including politicians, are better off than ever. He noted he was the sole current senator to vote for the 19th amendment and urged progress since 1914.
Mark R. Byers 58 former managing editor of the La Crosse Tribune and later the Wausau Record Herald died in a Wausau hospital after a stroke. An ardent foreign affairs columnist he created The Drifter and Foreign Affairs and continued writing for The Tribune while in Two Rivers and Wausau. Survived by wife Laura Kemnitz daughter Mary brother Paul and sister, services pending.
The storm battered Cedar Key with 125 mph winds, destroying 200 buildings, leaving 400-500 homeless and crippling the town’s fishing fleet. A second Atlantic hurricane with 150 mph winds threatened the coast as aid rushed in from Gainesville.
