Philadelphia reports the rescue of all thirty officers and crew of Submarine S-5 after nearly two days trapped beneath the Atlantic near Cape Henlopen. The Alanthus towed the S-5 toward the Delaware capes as air was pumped in and grappling gear secured.
Cranton Pennsylvania September 2 Representatives of the United Mine Workers signed a five year contract with coal operators based on the anthracite wage award. Workers seek further increases and a reopening of the pact as idle mines and protests continue across anthracite regions. A thirteen member committee was named to push for re negotiation and the president was expected to approve.
The American Association of Engineers released Governor Cox and Senator Harding replies to a questionnaire. Cox says he endorses all questions in general while Harding avoids specifics but supports appointing an engineer to the Interstate Commerce Commission and favors progressive conservation, budget reform, and reclamation policy.
Burr W. Jones a longtime Madison lawyer and former Wisconsin Bar Association president was appointed to the state supreme court bench to replace the late Justice J B Winslow. The Democrat will serve until 1923 when he seeks re election for the remainder of Winslow s term.
Subpoenas issued for a dozen witnesses as eGitte committee probes campaign contributions. HL Moore of Youngstown asserts proof that public anger over the Blair plan aimed to raise 18 million dollars. Barry N Blair named as father of the city quota book. committee vows to examine records at all political groups. Prices rise in Minneapolis mills with a stronger wheat market cited.
Mex City Sept 3 Pedro Zamora the Jalisen bandit has threatened to execute W A Gurdine and Bertie Jobs subjects who were abducted. Deserters say the threat to kill captives may be carried out if the men are not ransomed immediately. Government authorities are sought to free them without payment. Federal troops are said to be close behind Zamora near Il Panal mountains.
Thomas Tennyson of Houston Minnesota reported his 1919 Buick was stolen between 1 and 2 pm yesterday. Police traced a similar car toward Caledonia with a reckless driver, but no trace of the vehicle or thief was found by press time.
Grosse merchants will hold their fall opening on Thursday Friday and Saturday September 16 17 and 18. The dates were decided at a Chamber of Commerce meeting this morning. Los Angeles felt a light earthquake shock early today with no damage reported.
In Eau Claire Wisconsin on September 3 William J. Morgan Republican candidate for attorney general urged Bowden a North Dakota Nonpartizan leaguer to follow him to a room saying he would prove his honesty. Bowen rejected the challenge amid jeers and chants of Wisconsin over North Dakota. Morgan’s remark followed a speech attacking the Nonpartisan league program and the Blaine state controversy.
Wisconsin Rapids special report says R M Giles, departing adjutant of the American Legion in Wisconsin, circulated a bulletin praising Senator Lenroot for backing the soldiers bonus and condemning a rival political document. The bulletin defends Lenroot, cites his work at the Republican convention, and blasts opponents as unpatriotic. It asserts the bonus will pass in the next session and accuses Thompson of misstatements. The piece also notes tennis results in the same issue, with William Tildem advancing to the semifinals in Philadelphia.
