The La Crosse Common Council Finance Committee approves a tentative 1974 city budget with a mill rate of 34.43 mills, up from 34.25. a home valued at 20000 would pay 3.40 more in property taxes. The total city costs are 7.966 million with 3.585 million in revenues and a 4.281 million levy.
Senator William Saxbe of Ohio meets with President Nixon amid reports of a planned attorney general nomination. Saxbe, 57, a former Ohio attorney general, says he has not been offered the post. The piece also notes Nixon’s Alaska pick Morris Thompson for Indian Affairs and the broader political reshuffles surrounding Watergate era power.

White House aides defended lack of personal involvement by the President in the ITT settlement.
Mrs Wesley Northern 40 fired a .22 through a window when a man tried to break in. Police confiscated the gun. District attorney says she violated no law but urges nonlethal self protection. Northern questions her rights and may buy another pistol if returned. She says she fears her neighborhood is dangerous.
Witnesses from La Crosse County and the Town of Campbell urged a new Clinton Street Bridge over the Black River linking La Crosse and French Island at a public hearing. They called for two 12 foot traffic lanes with a divider, pedestrian walkway, and at least 16 foot clearance, citing safety and rust damage on the 1921 structure.
