A southern offensive aims to open a road to settlements in the Negev while the army says fighting has ebbed after 36 hours. Gaza lies 20 miles from the Egyptian frontier.
France announces a partial devaluation of the franc with a new monthly basis. Imports and exports will be priced at a medium rate between 214 and 313 francs per dollar, pegged at 264 francs. Other currencies rise about 22 percent in francs, affecting the dollar Swiss franc and Portuguese escudo.
