Engineer Whistles Fail to Save Deaf Farmer in Wisconsin Tragedy
A retired farmer, Andrew Dassinrud, 85, of Chaseburg Wisconsin, was struck and killed by the La Crosse and Southeastern passenger train near the Chaseburg area on a Sunday morning. He was walking along the tracks and, being deaf, did not hear the warning whistle as the train approached. Despite braking and attempts to stop within about 200 feet, the engine could not avoid the impact. Dassinrud, a well known Coon Valley resident who retired a decade ago, died instantly. friends cite his deafness as the cause of the accident.
