The agriculture department cautions Midwest farmers that their strong finances could worsen as prices shift. A bureau report urges cautious land and debt management, debt reduction, and reserves to weather price deflation and safeguard solvency through lean years.
In Cleveland a massive Columbus Day parade drew an estimated 100000 to Public Square with 50000 lining the avenue. Mayor Burke, Manager Boudreau and Bill Veeck rode in the lead car as fans cheered. The celebration paused school and brought joy despite missing players.
The United Mine Workers convention approved a 10 point program to improve the contract. It calls for shorter work weeks higher pay better welfare and retirement funds and new policy group to translate objectives into demands for next spring. The contract expires June 30 and the plan aims to boost wages reduce hours and improve safety and compensation across all mine classifications.
A falling board at the Birmingham exhibition hall struck William Bowson, 20, in the head and knocked a cigarette from his mouth. The board displayed a "No Smoking" sign.
Carl Bolton, 39, former minor union official, was held on 75000 bond in Detroit on a charge of attempting to kill CIO UAW president Walter P. Reuther. Judge Stein set October 19 for examination after Bolton pleaded innocent to assault with intent to kill. Reuther was shot April 20 at his home with no motive established. Bolton remanded to Wayne County Jail then to Oakland County Jail in Pontiac.
Robert E. Lester traced a silo silage fire to its source and, after consulting a county agent and fire authorities, obtained 40 blocks of 50-pound dry ice from a chemical firm. Dropped into the silo from the top, the ice halted the blaze with no charge for the ice.
LADYSMITH WIS – Mrs Alice Holtzheimer returned with her sleeping three year old Margie ending a 30 hour search across three counties. Authorities used bloodhounds and public tips after they disappeared Sunday from in front of Colletta’s school. Mrs Holtzheimer hitchhiked from Jefferson Fort Atkinson Baraboo then boarded a bus to Ladysmith where her parents greeted them. She apologized to her father and said she was sorry about everything.
Railroads petition the Interstate Commerce Commission for a 13 percent rate rise, replacing an October 1 request for eight percent. The rise follows a 10 cent per hour wage increase for conductors and trainmen effective October 16, with coal iron ore and perishable goods expected to stay below the overall rate. Shippers urge a general rate review to fix inequalities that push items to motor carriage.
Walter Morgan aged 76 completed a jump from 10 000 feet in Fosston Minnesota claiming it as a lifetime ambition. He said he wanted to show his six children and the town crowd of about two thousand that he could do it.
Immigration service reports 33 Jamaicans detained in a fraud birth certificate scheme. Twenty three held in New York and ten in Florida.
The Madison Capital Times on the front page endorses President Truman for re election in a concise editorial. The paper backs his leadership and calls for continued national policies under his administration.
The Associated Press reports Tuesday schedules for major candidates. Dewey campaigns in Illinois and Kentucky with a Louisville stop at 10:45 p.m. Warren speaks in Butte at 9:10 p.m. Truman tours Indiana and Illinois ending at Springfield armory at 9 p.m. Barkley trains through California with Los Angeles and Long Beach stops. Thurmond appears in Lynchburg and Lexington while Wright tours Tampa. Thomas appears in Medford Baraboo and Badger Wisconsin. No network broadcasts scheduled.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower declared that freedom faces a challenge from regimented statism as he was installed today as Columbia University's 13th president. He urged unity among Americans with diverse views to protect shared aspirations.
Chicago report lists Earl Warren Clark Gable Victor Mature Jack Smith and Lou Boudreau as the five most virile men in America. The International Artists Committee cited the presidential era of the new look and stressed these figures as ideal masculine models.
Governor Dewey charged that bipartisan foreign policy has only worked when Republicans cooperated with Truman. In a Louisville address he condemned the administration's handling of foreign affairs and urged a vigorous effort for a bipartisan peace policy if elected. He criticized the Vinson Moscow plan and said Republican cooperation is essential for strength at UN meetings.
President Truman told 1,500 to 1,800 in Richmond that Congress under Dewey weakens workers and endangers farm price support. He urged election of Schricker and other Democrats and warned of continued Republican control. He targeted Dewey’s allies, promoting the New Deal and criticizing the Republican stance on issues. He planned stops in Greenfield, Crawfordsville, Danville, Tolono, and Decatur with planned appearances alongside Democratic leaders.
Two individuals are reported missing by the city police. Byron Olds, a 62 year old Galesville man, five feet nine inches tall, last seen in a dark gray overcoat after a trip to La Crosse. Mrs George Burlingame, a city woman of about five eight, slender with dark hair and blue eyes, residing at 527 Fifth Avenue, is also missing.
The Wisconsin conservation department said ducks are on the move with blue wing teal and wood ducks leaving Horicon marsh and northern birds arriving. About 1,000 widgeon are on Horicon marsh. The duck season opens at noon Friday and runs to November 13 with a bag limit of eight and a possession limit of eight.
The Agriculture Department reiterates that farm price supports do not cause high food prices. Undersecretary A. J. Loveland cites meat as a main example, noting hogs at 149 percent parity and cattle calf and lamb prices well above parity with no legal support required, while price supports exist for only a minority of commodities.
US delegate Austin accuses Russia of wrecking efforts in the UN as Vishinsky offers a cards on the table reply. Britain France and the United States press for action on the Berlin blockade while the Little Six seek mediation progress. Western sources warn of a Soviet veto if a decisive resolution appears.
Chicago police hunt a mysterious Mr X in the brutal slaying of William John Granata, Republican candidate for circuit court clerk. Granata was found hacked to death outside his Loop skyscraper home with no motive known. A caller claimed a Greek man in ward 27 could influence the case if identified.
Washington Redskins tackle John Sanchez swore off chewing gum after an incident in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A loose gum plug flew as he was struck, forcing a tongue pull and a subsequent four-stitch closure to fix a tongue cut.
