The Oktoberfest Farmers Market attracted few sellers but many buyers on a parking lot by the Festgrounds on 3rd Street. Many producers sold out within two hours as customers shopped for produce and flowering plants.
Carsten O Christiansen a 27 year veteran physical therapist at Gundersen Clinic and La Crosse Lutheran Hospital has been appointed a consultant for Oak Forest Nursing Home Onalaska He will aid supervised exercise programs for residents Christiansen retired from Lutheran Hospital Aug 31 as staff therapist and was chief physical therapist for Gundersen
The Temporary Emergency Court of Appeals upheld Phase 4 retail gasoline price controls reversing a lower court injunction. The National Congress of Petroleum Retailers sued over the Cost of Living Council rule preventing automatic price increases to cover higher wholesale costs. The court cited shortages and inflation concerns as justification for the price restraints.
The proposed 1974 budget shows a large rise in Waste Water treatment costs from 286 198 to 452 053 as well as major increases for Police hiring two patrolmen and a sergeant. Other departments anticipate higher expenses for gasoline signs equipment and salaries.
Five people were treated for storm related injuries in St. Cloud as heavy rains winds and tornadoes struck central and southern Minnesota. Stearns and Benton counties and St. Cloud suffered the hardest hit with two inches plus rainfall and trees downed across streets. A tornado near Rockville destroyed three barns and killed two cows on the Schlangen farm while other farms in Lahr and Mossman holdings reported damage. A separate tornado near Monticello and another near Blooming Prairie caused further farm damage including destroyed buildings and at least one trailer house. Damage estimates run into thousands with property losses reported on several farms and homes.
Israeli officers said troops pulled back to defense points near the Bar-Lev Line as Egyptian forces extended across the east bank of the Suez Canal. Cairo claimed deep incursions into Sinai and heavy tank losses for Israel, while Syrian reports said the Golan Heights were near recapture and Israeli planes suffered losses.
In Washington a revised bill would force withdrawal of U S forces within 60 days without congressional approval or allow earlier disengagement via a concurrent resolution. President Nixon vows a veto, while leaders foresee a difficult override. The measure, aiming to curb undeclared wars, allows extensions up to 30 days for "unavoidable military necessity."
Herbert R. Dinger 18 of Eau Claire was arrested on a warrant for Saturday's Sparta Bowl burglary and theft of 1718. A 15 year old Sparta boy was charged and referred to juvenile authorities. a 17 year old from Eau Claire area is sought. The 15 year old implicated Dinger per Sparta Police paperwork.
Milwaukee Journal reports executives at Fox River Valley firms raised about 50000 for Nixon 1968 national Finance Committee with evidence of only individual contributions. Rexnord Inc. helped pool nearly 50000 among Milwaukee executives. Overall Wisconsin drives contributed to 890000 of 55 million raised nationally.
