Athletics Clinch Game in 1913 World Series Lead

Connie Mack's Athletics routed the New York Giants 4 1 in Philadelphia to take a lead in the 1913 World Series. Demaree lasted four innings before being relieved as Marquard stayed strong for the Giants. Fred Merkle homered for New York but could not overcome the early Athletics offense led by Marquard and Bender.

McGraws youthful pitcher Demaree was pulled in the fourth as Athletics hitters mounted four runs. Oldring tripled in the first, Merkle fielded Collins and relayed to McLean to prevent a run. In the second McInnes singled and Barry doubled to drive in a run. Strunk Barry Schang and Oldring all singled in the fourth for three more runs before Demaree exited. Rube Marquard warmed up in the outfield and replaced him.

Pioneer matron Ellen Hixon dies in La Crosse home

Ellen Hixon aged 78 widow of G C Hixon died at 2 PM at her Seventh and Badger street residence after two years illness. Born Ellen Pennell in Honeoye New York August 9 1837 she came to La Crosse in 1859 to teach. She leaves five sons Frank J M J Hixon William L George C and Robert Hixon plus siblings A R Pennell C P Sprague Isabelle Stephens. She supported Home of the Friendless and local charities.
