Disputes between Secretary Metcalf and Navy Bureau chiefs over the Pacific cruise have grown worse, touching personnel and battleship plans. The General Board splits on ships count and construction. when bureaus agree they oppose Metcalf.
In New York on October 7, Reverend Robert S. McArthur quoted John D. Rockefeller saying he regards himself only as steward of Standard Oil wealth, responsible to God for the stewardship. The rector spoke during Calvary Baptist Church youth class as the public discourse noted Rockefeller’s private self view amid current criticism.
Phillip Harrison of New York Lubricating testified in New York that Standard Oil forced rivals out of the South African oil market by pressuring steamship lines to lower rates for Standard Oil and raise them for competitors. He claimed the firm blocked rail shipments and warned it would build its own ships to cut transportation costs.
In Rochester Indiana October 7 Miss Iva Wagoner daughter of Rev J E Wagoner confessed she attempted to wreck a Lake Erie and Western passenger train to see her sweetheart Frank Steffy a section hand on the line She piled ties on the track near Rochester and waited Steffy was in the wrecking crew called to clear the track A detective questioned her and she gave a full confession She has been arrested.
M Fredrickson foreman at Vote- Berger company suffered a dislocated left shoulder while trying to board a moving street car at Hagar street. Motorman John T Ryan warned of an approaching car but Fredrickson did not hear. He escaped with bruises and torn clothing and was in a sling. twenty-one coworkers witnessed the incident and feared greater injury.
Stamboul Louisiana October 7 Ben Lily Roosevelt's hunting guide is a figure of note to the president. He once ran a small farm in West Carroll parish but chose the woods over cattle work. He spends weeks in the wilds and has endured two divorces for desertion though at home he is kind and loving.
On October 7 a new bomb hit Chicago gamblers as grand jury pressure waned and poolrooms prepared to resume. The Needmore club at 800 West Lake Street a long time free from police was bombed causing gamblers and patrons to flee in terror. The proprietor was later arrested for pulling a gun on a photographer.
In St Petersburg on October 7 a gang of convicts en route from Tumene to Tobol revolted against guards preferring death to Siberian exile. Twenty two were killed and eleven escaped armed with rifles. one or more guards were injured.
In Indianapolis on October 7 President John Mitchell of the United Mineworkers of America was reported gravely ill at the home of Sexton, editor of the Mineworkers Journal. He has not fully recovered from a prior operation and has endured severe symptoms recently, with medical aid sought two days ago.
New York Oct 7 Civil action to recover over ten million dollars allegedly paid unlawfully from the treasury of major New York traction companies to a circle of politicians and financiers will be started by the state public service commission. Criminal action will also target recipients and those who turned over funds, with a special grand jury to hear indictments of prominent men including Anthony N Brady and August Belmont.
Decatur Illinois October 7 The famous case in which prosecutors will accuse Fred Magill a former banker and his young wife Fay Graham Magill of causing the death of his first wife will be called this afternoon or tomorrow morning Prosecutor Miller will try to prove a death by own action pact with the wife that she carried out her part but he did not A large lawyers' team gathers The case has drawn wide attention Magill’s wife Pet died in the night and Magill is quoted as saying I feel the rope around my neck He married Fay Graham immediately after his wife’s death then traveled to Denver before arrest and indictments were returned
Four men were killed and about thirty injured when cupola No 1 exploded at Standard Steel Car in Butler Pennsylvania last night. Most workers were foreigners. The 150 by 100 foot wheel plant was wrecked with property loss around 100000 dollars. The blast was due to a molten pot upset containing 5000 pounds of metal ready for casting.
A lone burglar held up the University club of Evanston and the Northwestern Sigma Chi house early yesterday, threatening residents with a revolver and stealing over $500. Three weeks earlier Beta Theta Pi suffered a similar masked burglary. Twelve other frats vow to arm for protection.
Word comes of the death of Gustav Albert of 1632 Market Street who died at Mendota yesterday. Albert was sent to Mendota from this city August 9 by Judge Brindley. The remains will be shipped to La Crosse. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Memphis October 7 Resolutions urging Congress to provide funds for a fourteen foot Mississippi River channel from Chicago to the Gulf gained cheers at the deep waterways convention. Chicago selected as next year’s meeting site. The crowd was moved by the collapse of John S. Vance of Columbus Ohio the first speaker, believed to be out of danger.
La Crescent school directors authorize sale of bonds totaling 1500 dollars in 300 dollar lots with two year grace on payments and interest not to exceed six percent. Contractor Blinston refuses bill of 305 dollars for building work, plans to sue after being declined for nonconforming completion time.
