Army Reports Local Soldier Dead In Korea
Pfc. John G. Miles, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John N. Miles of 424 Charles street, was killed in action in Korea on Sept. 20. He enlisted Dec. 3, 1948, trained at Camp Breckinridge, KY, served in Japan, and went to Korea about July 4, 1950. He is survived by his parents three sisters Pauline LaVonne Rita Ann and two brothers Robert and David and his grandfather John Webber.

The Marine Corps reports casualties in Korea through Sept 25 totaled 2,357 in dead wounded missing and non battle losses. Three months after the invasion Seoul had been captured as Marines endured bitter fighting. Assistant Commandant Thorn provided the totals to the House Armed Services Committee, listing 346 killed in battle 66 died of wounds 1 901 wounded 30 missing and 14 non battle casualties. The corps then had 31 527 men in the theater.

Jailing Of Debtors In Vermont Upheld By Supreme Court
Vermont Supreme Court upholds a 142 year old law allowing jail for debtors under certain conditions. Walter Hollis of Bennington will remain jailed until he pays a $275 judgment to Francis R. Helmet Brings Woe But Saves Boy’s Life
In Des Moines, seven year old Bob Lorey wanted a football helmet to be like the big boys. His father bought him the helmet this week. While riding his bicycle the helmet slid over his eyes and he struck an oncoming car, suffering two broken ribs and internal injuries. The helmet is credited with saving him from fatal head injuries.
