Superintendent R A Clark returns to Manchester Iowa and the entire crew is laid off. Despite gathering thousands of young fish from the Black and Mississippi rivers the season is smaller than 1906 due to water levels and late summer and early fall. Railroads Plan Telephone Push to Meet New Work Limit
Railroads prepare for federal nine hour daily cap on telegraph operators starting next March. Lines out of Chicago plan expanded telephone systems, adding poles and wires, to replace some telegraph dispatch work. Schools of telegraphy exist, but training enough operators is doubtful. Some Northwest routes have not acted yet. If telephone use succeeds, many telegraph stations may be eliminated.
