Japanese Co-Ops Keep Em On Farm
A Tribune Telegraph report from Tokyo tours the Goshomi branch Fujisawa City Co-op. It shows a 20,000 acre operation offering seed stock, marketing outlets, retail sales, farm cars, nurseries, and a mushroom center. Members join freely but quit farming by quitting membership, while government support promises profitability. The complex includes crops, orchards, greenhouses, nurseries, and 10,000 hogs cared for by seven farming families.

Dairy Farmers Face Quandary as Costs Squeeze Milk
Washington economists say dairy farming faces a split outlook. For those selling out, high livestock prices and rising feed costs tempt exit, while remaining farmers face an economic squeeze despite record milk prices. Milk production is set to fall about three percent from 1972, with feed costs staying high and culling likely. Wisconsin output per cow fell seven percent, and California saw declines in mid 1970s. Canner and cutter cows averaged 30 dollars per hundredweight through August, likely to stay high this year.
