A cigar stump ignited a fire in the Salvation Army barracks in St. Louis when a newly used elevator hampered escape. Crowded by cold, 250 residents faced death. life lines were unused. The sixth victim died in the afternoon, with others dying after leaping from windows.
Tomorrow is a legal holiday and general day of rest. The Tribune staff will take a day off to join the home circle and partake in festive activities. No issue of the paper will be published tomorrow evening.

Des Moines Nov 28 Cal Rose of Oskaloosa committed death by his own action this morning in jail. He tied a cotton handkerchief to a steam pipe and leaped from his bunk after believing his wife had left him. The capital sentencing and jail staff investigated.

La Crosse public schools grant a four day vacation from Friday through Monday after Thanksgiving as part of the November board action. Thanksgiving programs were held in all schools and some locations collected foodstuffs to aid the needy. Pupils will distribute presents and oversee charitable work while teachers from nearby towns plan to return home for the holidays.

County Physician G J Egan was appointed surgeon for the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul road. He will work alongside longtime company surgeon Dr Suttor, with Egan in a supplementary assisting role while Suttor retains the old position.

The second set of fifty-one counts charges unlawful shipments to other Louisiana towns. Maximum penalties could exceed one million five hundred thousand dollars.
Emmett C. Lougham a Burlington brakeman of 1442 Loomis street was crushed between two freight car couplers this morning at Prescott while coupling cars. He was on freight No. 92 heading south and seriously injured internally. He was taken home aboard the noon train No. 52.
ER G Parmenter and crew escaped serious injury when a wood cutting saw broke into pieces at about 8 30 this morning at W C McCormack 161 Loomis street. About a third of the saw flew into the air and was not recovered. Five men were reportedly hurt though none seriously.
Mrs Bas sett testified she would not reveal who paid bills at the hospital and Atlantic City. She said her husband had forfeited the right to know about the child and refused to answer questions on payment details.
The La Crosse Choral Club met last evening at La Crosse High School Auditorium. Dr. Rasmussen spoke on the club’s progress and the Messiah program, while Prof. Wiley praised the chorus and predicted a fine rendition of the world’s greatest music.

C N Dunham owner of the Dunham crockery store at 51 313 Main street will retire Jan 1 and sell all stock by auction. The sale opens Monday morning Dec 3 and runs daily until everything is sold as Dunham moves to other ventures. A large Tribune ad is promised for Friday night.
County service will be established in Buffalo County on February 1, 1907. Congressman Esch received notification that the service would be inaugurated that day. A new route will be started from Cochraw Nelson Montana Fountain City and Mondovi.
At age 73 Noverdine described as unkempt and addicted to whisky was sent to county jail for sixty days by Judge Brindley. He pleaded guilty to drunkenness after multiple arrests in the past month, with interpreter William Weimar aiding. Noverdine, a La Crosse and Mound Prairie resident, admitted he cannot quit La Crosse and intoxicants.
Representative John J. Esch filed a detailed election expense report with the deeds office. Major outlays were travel and contributions to county committees, with lapsed items including rail fare, cigars, hotels, street cars, and several county and city campaign payments. Weimar spends $129 for county treasurer bid with $125 to campaign committee and $4 for printing cards.
Chester Gillette took the stand in his own behalf this morning. Mr. and Mrs. C Corrigan and Miss Ruth have left for Chicago and Mt. Pleasant Iowa for a two week stay.
La Crosse observes Thanksgiving with closures on banks and stores and a day filled with church services football and theatre. Rev W W Hurd of West Ave M E leads at First Presbyterian with sermons shared among rotating pastors. A city championship football game between La Crosse High and Wisconsin Business University is slated at League Park.
