New York banks began releasing millions in cash loans as the government pressures a return to a cash basis. President Roosevelt allegedly told J P Morgan that a government owned central bank could be needed if bankers do not cooperate, with funds to be released and sent west immediately.
In Washington on November 28 Speaker and guests relaxed with poker. John Sharp Williams and Wisconsin's Babock showed four jacks each. Cannon warned the deck would not reach the country, threatening to block reporters from sharing the story while he remains in public life.
Ness Moe, driver for the North side Bottling works, returned yesterday from Viroqua where he attended the funeral of his father John Moe who died at 55 last Thursday from lung fever. Surviving are his widow Nels Moe of this city and Paul Moe and Mary Moe of Viroqua. Interment was made at Viroqua.
Georgetown reports tense proceedings as commonwealth lawyers clash over juror selection in the Powers case. Affidavits allege Juror Martin favored Powers and Juror Wayland sought a place on the panel with help from Republican E. T. Wilson.
Scraps of a torn Annie Adams letter were pieced by state agents and shown in court as evidence. The defense challenged a 15 000 word hypothetical summary by Dr W M Barton covering all aspects from insanity to the shooting. The defendant Mrs Bradley appeared hopeful yet suffered a Sabbath of deep distress as sympathy from high officials’ wives filled the courtroom.
The U S government suit against Swift and Company over 5000 pounds of alleged uninspected lard shipped from Winona Minnesota to La Crosse may be postponed or dismissed. Subpoenas for La Crosse witnesses were canceled while Dr Henry Roome remains as a potential witness.
A proposed inland waterway project, headed by John W. Small, envisions a network from Cape Cod to Beaufort Inlet and south to Florida. Delegates from 17 states meet in Philadelphia to promote the plan, with estimates soaring to about 500 million dollars. The route would cut water distance Boston to New York by roughly 75 miles and connect via Long Island Sound, the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, and Currituck Sound, among others, before continuing to Norfolk.
Washington dispatch reports Bryan lieutenants in Washington view Governor Hughes of New York as a stronger presidential factor than Taft or La Follette. They believe Hughes would defeat Roosevelt more easily than Taft and would give Bryan the best chance to win. They see uncertainty with La Follette or Cummins and anticipate Roosevelt’s possible third-term bid being risky for Bryan. Continued on page 6.
A threatening device was found along a path leading to George W. Glover, son of Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy, after he refused to pay $3,000 in the next friends suit. A wire lay across his path and a cylindrical object contained a percussion cap and a can of slugs and dynamite.
James F. Gibson a former superintendent of the Chicago and Milwaukee division of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul railroad died in Minneapolis at 55. He recently supervised construction on the Pacific coast extension and earlier worked in railroad circles. A morphine overdose while seeking sleep caused his death, found in his Majestic hotel room. Survived by his widow and two children Orrin and Mabel. widow formerly Miss Josephine Dennison. Funeral set for Fox Lake Wisconsin.
Sparta High school teams to play here in the afternoon, followed by a social at the Elk's hall Thanksgiving evening. Alumni and friends of the school are urged to attend as decorations feature Sparta and La Crosse pennants and college banners.

San Francisco report from the President arriving from Seattle states that during rough weather on Friday three girls under 14 were swept overboard and lost. Florence Buckman aged 13 and Rita and Ada Schotte aged 12 and 4 were playing in a gangway amidships. A large wave is believed to have struck the ship and swept them away. their disappearance was not noted for an hour.
Ella Swift, Merle Mettler, and Frank Hartfeld died when ice broke on Little creek near Mason City. Merle Mettler and Ella Swift, both girls, were skating and fell through. Hartfeld, aged 18, drowned while attempting a rescue. the two girls’ bodies were recovered.
New York November 25 thirteen persons mainly women and children die in a five story tenement fire described as a fire trap. Flames rise rapidly trapping occupants on upper floors as firemen battle a mass of blaze and rescue efforts amid panic and smoke.
Four persons died in a blaze at the Windhorst dry goods store in Cincinnati. Three bodies have been recovered and five remain missing in the ruins. The loss is estimated at about half a million dollars. One woman leaped from a floor and died of injuries, two others jumped from floors and escaped.
Rathdrum Idaho Nov 2 The Adams murder trial jury failed to reach a verdict after twenty four hours deliberation. The eight jurors favored acquittal and four favored conviction. Adams linked to the We Federation of Miners and the August 1904 assassination of Fred.
In Chicago on November 25, witnesses testified in the Walsh trial that many signers of notes for millions did not know the secur ity existed until notified by the government. The defense alleges Walsh affixed the names of rail employees without their authority to numerous notes, each for 92000 dollars.
Mrs Mary Banyard aged 60 collapsed and died during a confrontation with her son in Evansville Indiana this noon. Police report the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute and the woman had been in frail health.
