Handicapped girl fights for life amid surges of illness
Cheryl Murphy, a 21 year old with hydrocephalus and birth defects, has battled cancer cobalt poisoning a collapsed lung and two brain operations in 111 days. Doctors doubted her survival but she repeatedly recovered, saying she would not die as her mother Barbara Murphy recounts her courage and family strain from medical bills. Cheryl’s latest brain surgery and shunt removals followed infections and pneumonia leaving her under care at St Anthony's Hospital while her mother, a divorced accounting clerk, tends to her and her sister Michelle.

Six Injured In Opener For Hunters In Coulee Region
Six men were wounded in hunting incidents across the Coulee Region this weekend, with La Crosse residents Eugene Wiedman and Bernard Poellinger among the injured. Wiedman, at 2500 S. 26th St., suffers a stomach wound and is listed in satisfactory condition at La Crosse Lutheran Hospital. Poellinger, of 1324 Charles Sr., was treated for a left forearm bullet wound and released from Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Whitehall. Authorities say the bullet did not come from a safety-violating hunter. Additional shooters included Eugene C. Lang in Platteville, Larry E. Peterson in Hapfield, Leo L. Lougue in Janesville, and Mike G. Reineke in Potosi, all hit on various county highways while four other hunters were wounded in Jackson County. In Crawford County, two dogs and a cow were killed by bullets. Monroe County reported no incidents.
