Fire and water mains rupture hinder rescue. a woman and child were saved, Prout’s wife witnessed his death, four workers escaped through a sewer to the river.
Chicago November 20. Peter Van Vlissingen once a respected real estate figure and socialite is headed to the penitentiary after being convicted of forgeries totaling $700,000. Two friends questioned papers and raised the alarm.
Cleveland mayor rejects voluntary bankruptcy as unfair to creditors and seeks to resolve debts. His Euclid Avenue home valued at 250000 remains unencumbered, and supporters offer cash and a touring car to aid his finances amid public interest.

An automobile with eight aboard including several women sped north and plunged 25 feet into the Calumet river at dawn. Chauffeur Joseph Meyer, 22, and Margaret Atkins, 20, drowned. four chauffeurs and four young women were rescued. Bodies recovered from the water.
The First National Bank of Fort Scott closed on orders from President Grant Hornaday, with Washington authorities asked to appoint a receiver. Liabilities total $662,000, assets $789,000, and capital stock $100,000. The bank had wide local dealings and the impact is uncertain. Hornaday, reputed millionaire, has pledged to use his private fortune to cover bank losses.
In Asheville on November 20 Sophie Harrison Edwards and her husband Baker Edwards were found not guilty of a statutory charge after a sensational trial against Echols McBee. The judge called them victims of trivial and malicious prosecution as the couple left Squire Fletcher's court in the mountains above Asheville.
A shawl raffled at Elenore Hoelzel's home at 1428 Farnam street Thursday evening was won by Mr. Emil Ruoff. The winning number drawn was 180.
Richard Croker ex-chief of Tammany arrived aboard the Lusitania. He said he would winter in California and denied any intention to reenter politics. Croker refused demonstrations, opting to land quietly and proceed to the Democratic Club to use his old quarters.
