Cold weather froze the Korean front as about 90,000 Chinese Communist troops faced U S first corps units near Hapsu and Pyongyang. West of Seoul icy winds and six inches of snow slowed a U S second division flank advance while Red battalions probed South Korean defenses northeast of the capital.
The U S seventh Marine Regiment seized Hagaru at the Changjin reservoir south tip with no opposition reported by First Marine Division headquarters. Civilians said Communist forces had left three days earlier. Marines reported capturing some weapons and ammunition.
A searing AP dispatch details U S forces in Korea fighting in subzero conditions near Pungsan KapSan and Orangchon river. Troops from the Eighth and Seventh Divisions endure 21 below zero winds and frozen terrain as Marines move toward Changijin reservoir and icy borders.

CBS TV color demonstration drew capacity crowds in New York as the CBS system began public, non commercial previews six days before the FCC’s November 20 commercial launch. Viewers saw broadcasts on ten color receivers in a Fifth Avenue showroom eight blocks from WCBS-TV transmitter, with most participants calling it swell and few expressing criticism of the color.
Robert C. Wintermeyer three died after monthslong battle with leukemia. Last week he had Christmas with a lighted tree by his bed. Surviving siblings are Donna Lee and David Eugene. Funeral held at Crandall and Sons Mauston with Rev Hobart S Skilbred officiating. Burial in Mauston Oakwood cemetery.
The Army announced a January draft call of 40000 draftees, raising total wartime calls to 50000 since Korea. November through December figures fluctuated between 70000 and 40000. Space limits at training camps constrained the January quota as the Navy and Air Force rely on volunteers. Most of the 210000 draftees inducted by year end will remain in camp through four months of basic training.

Franklin Pamperin, chairman of the ways committee, says recommendations for city employee salary increases will be revealed at the meeting. Eddie Collins six year old disappeared from Rife country school after being lured away by two men in a maroon car. He had been living with Roy E Richwine Jr co owner of a dirt speedway since his mother Mary Collins divorced. Cumberland County DA William Mark said mother consented to adoption and sought a good home. Police across 13 states conducted the search.
