Washington officials warn dry weather threatens fall sown wheat and other grains for harvest next year. The report notes potential need for reserves to meet food demand and cites large but uneven plantings and delayed moisture as factors shaping 1952 crop results and 1953 outlook.
Philip Murray, longtime CIO president and labor statesman, died in San Francisco. His funeral drew 3,000 at St Pauls Cathedral and 10,000 in procession as CIO officials postponed the Los Angeles convention, moving it to Atlantic City. John L. Fox 32 of La Crosse died from injuries after a high speed crash on Highway 61 near Dakota Wednesday night. Fox, a Meckesson-Robbins salesman, was taken to a Winona hospital where he died Thursday morning. Funeral services set for Saturday at First Lutheran Church with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Abraham H Feller, a close associate of United Nations Secretary General Trygve Lie and head of the UN legal department, leaped to his death from his Central Park area apartment before questioning by the McCarran Internal Security Committee. He had been in ill health and nervous condition.
Milwaukee Finance Committee ruled the city cannot fund a proposed four percent wage increase for 3,500 teachers and school workers. The board noted budget strains while a spokesman cited a prior city employee raise costing about 1 million annually, adding dissatisfaction among staff.
United Nations forces report renewed Chinese assault on Pinpoint Hill during a close in battle on Sniper Ridge. Two Red battalions about 1,000 men overran the height after heavy artillery fire, pushing South Korean troops back to lower ground. Casualties for the week totaled 1,318 U S battle casualties with 266 killed.
South Korean troops on Sniper Ridge charged that Chinese Communist artillery fired gas shells into their positions. U S officers urged extreme caution as they investigated and noted prior misidentifications of fumes as gas.

Gov. Kohler announced new members to the state Civil Service Advisory Committee. The appointees are Harry W. Harder, state commissioner of taxation. Donald McDowell, director of the Department of Agriculture. and John W. Tramburg, director of the Department of Public Welfare.

Illinois politics veteran William G. Stratton, 38, named the state’s youngest governor-elect since 1883, defeating Lt. Gov. Sherwood Dixon. Once called the boy wonder at 26 for Congress, Stratton now leans conservative within the GOP and vows no tax increases while planning bills for the January legislature. He will earn $25,000 annually, a raise approved by the 1951 legislature.
